Houston Texans Football

When the Houston Oilers left town most Houston residents despaired of ever seeing another NFL team in their city. But wealthy Houston businessman Bob McNair managed to convince the NFL that Houston was still a viable NFL city and in 2002 the Houston Texans brought pro football back to their pigskin starved city. Hopes were high as the Texans drafted QB David Carr as the cornerstone of the team.

Years later the Texans are still waiting for that first winning season. But the controversy swirling around the team has only increased. In the 2006 NFL Draft the Texans bypassed USC running back Reggie Bush to take defensive lineman Mario Williams as the first pick in the draft. They also passed on local hero Vince Young, the Texas quarterback who led his team to a National Championship, earning the Texans the ire of every football fan in the state.

But the winds of change are starting to blow in Reliant Stadium. While Mario Williams may not have the flash of a Bush or a Young, he is a talent that can shine for years to come. Head Coach Gary Kubiak, the architect of the Denver Broncos high powered offense, has ditched David Carr and cast his fortune with new quarterback Matt Schaub, obtained in a trade with Atlanta. They also went back to the well for more defensive line help in the 2007 Draft, taking defensive tackle Amobi Okoye in the first round.

As the Houston Texans get ready for 2007, it’s certainly going to be interesting. Is Matt Schaub the answer at quarterbavck or was David Carr the scapegoat for a pathetic offensive line?
