Alamo Bowl History
The Alamo Bowl has been played annually in San Antonio, TX since 1993, matching the fourth and fifth choice Teams from the Big Ten and Big 12 Conferences. The game is a huge draw, and has changed sponsorships/partnerships throughout the years - starting as the Builders Square Alamo Bowl, in 1998 changing into the Sylvania Alamo Bowl, ending as the MasterCard Alamo Bowl in 2005. 2007 starts Valero Energy Corporation's title sponsorship. The Bowl started as a smart way to perk up the slowest week of tourism - a way for football fans to fill up the Alamodome and downtown hotels in the Alamo City. The first Alamo Bowl kicked off New Year's Eve 1993 with 45,716 fans watching Cal beat Iowa. The '05 Alamo Bowl sparked one of the most controversial plays in Bowl History, with a multi-lateral play in which Nebraska team and staff, and also the Michigan coaches and media, stormed the field before the play was outed. Iowa returned in '06, up against the Texas Longhorns - and breaking the Alamodome facility record for any sporting event. Ticket sales show this is an event not to be missed! From record breaking performances - like Nebraska's 66 points in 2000. to Drew Tate leading an 80 yard touchdown, the Alamo Bowl promises excitement. The 17th Anniversary Alamo Bowl will cap off a "January to Remember" in San Antonio. Tickets to this game are a must-have!
2006 Review: Iowa vs. Texas
Was Iowa intimidated from the start? They seemed to play down the stretch with very little momentum. However, they got it together and got tough on Texas. They jumped on them early and got a 14-0 headstart before Texas knew what was happening. Texas has a tendency to start slow, and they definitely had a slow first quarter. Both teams had problems running the ball, but the key point of the 2006 Alamo Bowl happened when Drew Tate threw an interception at end zone, Iowa turned the ball over, and Texas scored right before the half. The Game Ball definitely goes to Colt McCoy, bouncing back from an injury with an incredibly solid game: the Longhorn QB passed for 308 yards, and had two touchdowns - setting a Freshmen record in the process. On the Hawkeye side, Andy Brodell gets the credit, making a move on Aaron Ross for a long score. However, it was over for Iowa when receiver Dominique Douglas got tackled for an 11 yard loss on an attempted pass. Iowa could not get control of the ball at all until there were 2 seconds left in the game. Yet, the Hawkeyes showed a lot of heart - coming into the Bowl at a 6-6, coach Kirk Ferentz deserves props for getting his team ready for the Bowl. The Texas defense was quite smart, limiting the production of TE Scot Chandler - and avoiding its first three-game losing streak since '99.
